Picking up a newborn baby

If you are a first-time parent you might find picking up and holding a newborn baby a little daunting at first because your baby seems too delicate to handle. But as long as you provide proper support, you will find that he/she is perfectly safe and loves being held.

Always put your baby on her back to sleep to sleep. She will be at lower risk of cot death and chocking than if she sleeps on her tummy or her side. However, when she is awake, she should spend some time each day lying on her front.

Picking up your newborn baby: Step by Step

  • To pick up your baby, slide one hand under her lower back and bottom and the other under her head and neck.
  • Lift her gently and slowly so that her body is supported and her head can’t loll back.
  • Carefully transfer her head to the crook of your elbow or your shoulder so that it remains supported.

Handling your new born baby

Most babies like to be handled in a firm way, especially in the early weeks when the sensation of being tightly enclosed whether by your arms, by clothing or by a swaddling shawl, gives a great sense of security. When it comes to actually moving your baby, do it as slowly, as gently and as quietly as you can. There are two main positions for carrying your baby in your arms. The first is with the baby's head in the crook of either arm, slightly higher than the rest of the body, which rests on the lower part of your arm encircled by the wrist and the hand that support her back and bottom. Your other arm provides additional support, to the baby's bottom and legs. This position allows you to talk to and smile at your baby.

The second way is to hold your baby against the upper part of your chest, with your forearm across her back and her head resting on your shoulder supported by your hand. This position leaves the other hand free, which is useful if you need to pick something up. Otherwise it can provide support to the baby's bottom.

Handling your newborn baby from head to eyes

Head: The head is one of the most fragile parts of your baby’s body.  A newborn’s skull isn’t fully formed yet.  It will have soft parts called fontanelles, where the bones haven’t fully fused yet. These can be found at the top and the back of the head, and will close over the next two years. Be careful with these parts even though a thick layer of skin already protects them.

Newborn Baby's 30th Week: Diet is more important

Your 30 week old baby is now starting to understand dimensional galaxy. You may see his/her try to sort toys and blocks by size. She/he is probably also fascinated with his/her reflection and games like peek-a-boo, where people or his/her favorite toys withdraw and return.

Your baby can see evidence of this not only in his/her crawling and movement, but also when you attempt to do something the baby is opposed to, like putting his/her into the stroller or changing his/her diaper. She /he can probably also now straighten his/her back and twist his/her trunk when he/she sits.

By 30 weeks old, your baby may be pulling himself (herself) up to a standing position and staying there for a few moments. This week your baby will also be absorbed by toys that have specific functions, such as phones.

Newborn Baby's 24th Week: Human interaction is incredibly important for baby's development

During 24th week of newborn baby’s teeth will be developed. 24-week-old baby may be able to support his/her own weight by standing straight on his/her legs. 6-month-old baby is still waking up in the middle of the night to be fed, you may want to slowly decrease the amount you feed him/her to eliminate this feeding altogether.

Your baby's weight at this point can be anywhere from double to triple his/her birth weight. When 6 months old, the average baby boy will weigh 7.71 Kg, and the average baby girl will weigh just about 7.26Kg.

By 6 months, many babies are able to support their own weight by standing upright on their legs -- with your help for balance, of progress. Most babies have stopped needing the midnight feeding by 6 months. If you and your baby are not yet sleeping through the night because of the middle-of-the-night feeding, it could be that your baby is waking up out of habit and not true appetite. Shaping up your body after delivery: Useful Tips

Shaping up after delivery with some gentle exercising everyday your figure can return to normal in as little as 3months after the delivery, although your stomach muscles may not be as firm as before.

Build up your exercise programme slowly at first as your ligaments are still soft and stretchy, and always stop straightaway if you feel pain or tiredness. It is best to exercise a little, but on a regular basis. Both fit and unfit new moms should ease into an exercise routine by taking 20-minute walks three days a week.

The following exercises into your daily routine, and continue for at least three months. Repeat each exercise as many times as is comfortable. Pelvic floor exercise helps strengthens the stomach muscles and makes the back more flexible. The pelvic tile is especially helpful if you suffer from backache.

Another exercise is to pull the muscles up and in as before, but to lift, squeeze and tighten the muscles quite quickly, as in the beat of a pulse and then release. Repeat five times, again breathing normally.
