What to pack in your hospital bag

The 9 months leading up to the day when your child says HELLO (DITO NA ME!!) is your time to prepare. The crib, the diaper bags, the clothes, the toys, the strollers, the bottles, the monthly check-ups and weigh-ins all lead to that one day when you finally go to the hospital to finally meet the little cutie who’s been kicking and moving inside you. You may also need to go into hospital for an overnight stay at some other point during your pregnancy before the birth, and although it's probably over-the-top to have a bag prepared on the off-chance, it is a good idea to be mentally prepared for what you would need to have with you. So here's what to pack for an overnight stay:

For you

  • Your maternity notes
  • A dressing gown you’ll feel comfortable walking around the halls in
  • A wash bag with your washing essentials and a hairbrush or comb
  • Comfortable house shoes or slippers for when you want to go wandering the corridors
  • A towel
  • A change of underwear
  • Two nightgowns

And if you're preparing a bag for labour then add to that:

  • Any props you plan to use in labour, whether that’s aromatherapy candles, oils, a pillow, massage instruments, rescue remedy, calming music and player etc.
  • High energy snacks for yourself and birthing partner Several pairs of old or disposable knickers and at least one nursing bra if you’re planning/hoping to breastfeed
  • If you're planning on breastfeeding then take nightgowns that won’t interfere with feeding after the birth i.e. open-fronted

forceps delivery using instruments

A forceps delivery is a type of operative vaginal delivery. It's sometimes needed in the course of vaginal childbirth. Forceps are instruments designed to help in the delivery of the fetus by applying traction to the fetal head. Many different types of forceps have been described and developed.

Generally, forceps consist of 2 mirror image metal instruments that are manipulated to cradle the fetal head and are articulated, after which traction is applied to effect delivery.

Forceps have 4 major components, they are:

Blades: The blades grasp the fetus. Each blade has a curve to fit around the fetal head. The blades are oval or elliptical and can be with a hole in the middle or solid. Many blades are also curved in a plane 90° from the cephalic curve to fit the maternal pelvis.

High frequency of sound waves bounces off the inner parts especially your baby and the sound waves are turned into a digital image which shows your baby’s present position and movements. When the sound waves bounce in hard objects such as baby’s bones the sound waves become bigger and will reflect in the image, as white. Soft tissues are become grey. Babies are lies in amniotic fluid which appear in the image as black because the sound waves easily go through the fluids.

Labor pain

Some women experience very different signs of labor pain. There are several hormonal and physical changes may indicate the beginning of labor
There are three stages of Labor pain.

The first stage starts with the onset of uterine contractions that open up the cervix or the mouth of the uterus to about 10 cms. Generally this lasts for 8-14 hours. Pain usually deepens towards the end when the contractions become frequent and stronger. This time your cervix is 4-5 cms open.
The second stage your cervix is fully dilated and is completed with the birth of the baby. This stage lasts for 1-2 hours for the first baby.
The third stage starts immediately after the birth of the baby and concludes with the delivery of the placenta. It takes 15 mts to one hour. The delivery of the placenta is accompanied with some amount of bleeding. The episiotomy is stitched immediately afterwards.

Lightening

The process of your baby relaxing or lowering into your pelvis just before labor is called lightening. Lightening can occur a few weeks or a few hours before labor. Because the uterus rests on the bladder more after lightening, you may feel the need to urinate more frequently.

Shaping up your body after delivery: Useful Tips

Shaping up after delivery with some gentle exercising everyday your figure can return to normal in as little as 3months after the delivery, although your stomach muscles may not be as firm as before.

Build up your exercise programme slowly at first as your ligaments are still soft and stretchy, and always stop straightaway if you feel pain or tiredness. It is best to exercise a little, but on a regular basis. Both fit and unfit new moms should ease into an exercise routine by taking 20-minute walks three days a week.

The following exercises into your daily routine, and continue for at least three months. Repeat each exercise as many times as is comfortable. Pelvic floor exercise helps strengthens the stomach muscles and makes the back more flexible. The pelvic tile is especially helpful if you suffer from backache.

Another exercise is to pull the muscles up and in as before, but to lift, squeeze and tighten the muscles quite quickly, as in the beat of a pulse and then release. Repeat five times, again breathing normally.
