Baby's bath time should be a time of fun and happiness for parent's and baby alike. With the proper precautions, baby bathing can be done safely and effectively without jeopardizing the health of your little on. Infant baths can get pretty tricky since baby's do seem to get really slippery when wet, but making sure that you follow some safety advice will assure that your baby can enjoy his bath and you can enjoy it with him.
Baby bath safety is very important as the water poses some extreme safety risks to an infant. An infant could drown on as little as 2 tablespoons of water when ingested improperly into the lungs. For this reason it is important to be well informed about the hazards or water and the need to be safe during baby's bath time every single time he takes a bath. Do not think for a second that baby's can be left alone in the tub...children drown in the tub and babies can drown even faster.
Before you ever begin to give baby a bath make sure that you have all your necessary supplies within arms reach. This will assure that you do not feel the need to look away or walk away for something...not even for a second! It is a good idea to keep bath supplies together in a portable basket of some sorts that you are always prepared for baby's bath in advance and there is little chance of forgetting anything.
When filling the baby's bath make sure that the water is not too hot. A baby has extremely delicate skin that burns very easily. Bath water temperature should be measured with a thermometer for safety purposes before placing baby into the tub. Keep a thermometer in the bath essentials basket so that you will always remember to test the water temperature before placing baby into the tub. Setting your water heater to a maximum of 120 degrees will help to prevent children from scalding themselves on the water in your home.
If something comes up and you must leave the bathroom for some reason, take baby with you! Do not leave the baby in the bathroom no matter what. A baby can quickly and easily drown in water that is very shallow so to keep baby safe, make sure he is never left unattended near any water even a small amount.
Never place a baby bath seat in a tub that has a textured or no slip surface. The seat will not adhere to these types of surfaces and the seat could slip around with baby in it. If your tub has a no lip surface then you should use a foam pad to sit baby on in the tub and keep your hands on him at all times.
While tubside type seats are fun for baby, they are not made for large or sunken bathtubs. If you have a garden style tub then you should not be using a tubside model baby bathtub to bathe baby in. For safety purposes you should only use tubside baths on standard size bathtubs to prevent possible slipping and moving while the baby is in it.
Use only baby soaps and shampoos. Shampoos that are not made especially for baby can irritate the skin and harm the eyes. Make sure that the shampoo that you use on baby's hair is safe and will not hurt if he gets it into his eyes.
Making sure that you are well prepared for bath time will assure that you take the necessary safety precautions to make baby's bath safe and fun for him and for you. Stay on task with what you are doing and do not worry about answering the phone or the door while you are giving the baby a bath. Remember that safety is all a factor of being well informed so stay up to date on product recalls and other bath time related safety measures that you can take to keep baby happy and safe during every bath.
